Lisbon

The imposing Tagus river (Tejo) flows alongside Lisbon from east to west. Its source lies in Spain, but a good part of its journey to the sea lies inside Portuguese frontiers before it meets the Atlantic ocean. Lisbon, the dazzling city that stretches along the banks of the Tagus, is an enchanting capital. There is the fortress around which the city originally sprang up, and which is now circled by neighborhoods drenched with medieval charm.

History of Lisbon
Everywhere are fine monuments that bring to mind the great Age of Discoveries, and picturesque houses whose facades are decked with ornate ceramic tiles.  As the dusk turns to night, the yellow electric tramcars continue to wind their way up and down the hills of the old capital, while the sound of traditional Fado folk songs enlivens many a candle-lit dinner table. But the capital also provides ample opportunity for seeing popular celebrations, for shopping and for enjoying the nightlife along the riverbanks. With the port and marinas situated nearby, water sports are a natural attraction too.

The views from the Saint George’s Castle high above the city in the Alfama district are fabulous.  A walk through the narrow streets,  will display the overlays of Roman, Visigothic and Moorish history. Everywhere you go, the lovely  blue “azulejos” (ornamental tiles) and lacy wrought iron window grilles are to be seen.  Stroll the tree lined avenues, stop at  the lovely Rossio Square with splendid fountain, enjoy the shops, and make a stop at one of the many fine restaurants where wonderful fresh seafood is served.

There are many museums in Lisbon, too many for us to list them all, but here are some: the Military Museum, Museum of S. Roque with its sacred art, Da Cidade Museum showing the evolution of Lisbon, the Monastery dos Jeronimos and of course the Museum of National Tiles (Museu Nacional do Azulejo), this museum is housed in the former convent of Madre de Deus.

For those interested in Jewish history in Lisbon, there is the Museu Arqueologico do Carmo, where a great collection of tombstones is to be found, amongst which is the “Monchique Stone” with inscriptions written in Hebrew.  In the Alfama quarter you can find the “Rua da Judiaria (Jews Street) and close by at #8 Beco das Barrelas, is the site which tradition holds to be that of the ancient synagogue. In the center of the city at 59 Rua Alexandre Herculano, is the Shaare Tikva Synagogue.

A visit to Lisbon would not be complete without going to hear some “Fado”,  Portugal’s pride and joy. Fado is sung in bars and restaurants throughout the country.  Even if you cannot understand the words, which are normally about tragic love, you will enjoy it, especially over a delicious Portugues meal.

Lisbon also boasts a lovely coast line with typical fishing villages such as Estoril and Cascais and interior towns such as Queluz, to see the Rococo style Palace, set a beautiful garden, it was once the summer residence of the Kings & Queens of Portugal. Mafra, with it’s splendid Library in the enormous Baroque Palace-Monastery and Sintra, one of the oldest and most beautiful towns of Portugal perched high in the hills and surrounded by lush vegetation. Lord Byron called it a “glorious Eden” .  Visit the 14th century Palacio Real, with its magnificent chimneys.  The Moorish castle, the Palace of Pena, has a Disneyesque pastiche of architectural styles and a garden with 3,000 different species of plants.
