Port Wine is a sweet fortified wine, exclusively produced in the Douro designated region, named after the city of Porto, where it is aged and bottled. Its unmistakable bouquet, body and flavor are due to the high quality of the grapes, as well as to the region's soil and climatic conditions.
"Vinho do Porto" is basically a geographic name of origin. There are, in fact, several types of Port Wine - some are aged in wooden casks and others in bottles. The former are usually the result of a skilful blending of wines from different harvests, in order to keep the wine's vitality and to provide it with homogeneous characteristics, As a rule the label has no indication of date or vintage. The latter are produced from only one harvest. The following are the main types to be found; white, red/ruby and tawny.

History of Porto Torres dos Clerigos and the old medieval Jewish Quarter. Of course when in Porto, you must visit one of the wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia and enjoy some free port wine tasting. For the art lover, one can visit the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art for Portuguese and international art from the mid 1960’s to today. Places to visit from Porto are: Guimaraes, an attractive medieval town and first capital of Portugal. It is also the birthplace of D Afonso Henriques (in the early years of the 12 century), first king of Portugal. The Pousada there is an ancient seigneaurial mansion. The church of St. Michael where the king was baptized is well worth your attention, as is the Rua de Santa Maria street, with it’s carved wooden balconies, stone archways and well worn paving stones. This street leads to Largo da Oliveira (Olive Tree Square) and the 10th century church there. Barcelos, a lovely walled town, with a Ceramics Museum that is worth a visit, as is the Archeological Museum of the Dukes Palace. Other areas are the ancient Jewish quarter or the streets lined with medieval houses and Baroque manors. Viana do Castelo, a town known for its handicrafts, where one can enjoy a trip on one of the typical boats of the region, or Braga founded by the Celts and later the Romans, are just a few more interesting places to see. For those interested in Jewish history, one can see the Plaque commemorating the “Order for the Expulsion of the Jews” in Porto. In the area of Boavista, at #340 Rua Guerra Junqueiro, is the Synagogue the “Mekor Haim” built in 1929 by the Jewish Community of Porto. |
