Our suggestion:

Pick up a car rental at airport on arrival and depart to first Pousada, or stay one night in city of arrival, then the following day, collect your car rental at the city location and depart to your first Pousada of choice. A car rental is the best way to go, as these unique accommodations are usually found outside of the cities, mostly in beautiful rural surrounding.
