Catalonia, Mediterrean coast. The Capital of Catalonia is Barcelona, a modern city on the Mediterranean. Catalonia is famous for it’s sparkling “Cava” wine . Although most people only drink this wine after dinner to “toast” the event, in Catalonia, people drink this delicious ‘Cava” wine with their regular meals. Vilafranca del Penedes, is the wine capital of the Penedes region. Castilla-Leon, Northwest of Madrid. Castilla-Leon is an enormous region on a very larg plateau call “la meseta” and apart from the grandeur of it’s plains, has a splendid heritage of histori sites, like Segovia, Avila, Burgos to name a few. Rivera del Duero and Peñafiel are famous towns of the region with wineries to visit, the later stands up high overlooking the beautiful Duero river. Jerez, south of Seville. Jerez, the town and also the name of the famous sherry wines of the region. A wonderful Andalusia town, it houses the most famous names in Sherry. Not only famous for it’s wines and sherries, but world renown for the Andalusia Horse Show. Here one can visit the “Bodegas” and see how the sherry is made, and taste the different types of sherry from dry to very sweet. Porto-Douro Valley, Northern Portugal. The Port region is to be found in the upper Rio Douro valley and it’s tributaries which stretch for 62 miles. The terraced vineyards are on slopes that reach up to 500 meters high, and the land is devided into private estates called “Quintas” many of which are to be found at the mouth of the River Douro in the town of Vila Nova de Guia. This little town is located on the southern bank of the river across from the magnificent city of Porto. Alentejo, between Lisbon and the Algarve and Maderia, are more wine regions of Portugal
